Upper Mustang is a remote and isolated region north west of Pokhara.
It is also known as the ‘Last Forbidden Kingdom of Lho’ because this once Buddhist region was closed to foreigners until 1992 and still retains much of its medieval Tibetan culture, with its ancient monasteries, traditional villages and cave dwellings on the wind-eroded cliffs, as well as the stunning walled city of Lo Manthang.
This spectacular trek starts after a scenic flight from Pokhara to Jomsom through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest canyon in the world, between the Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna mountains.
The trail ascends through a stunningly barren landscape of arid alpine desert with colourful rock formations, deep ravines and striking views of the surrounding Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and other Himalayan peaks up to the lofty capital of Lo Manthang.
This is a restricted area, requiring an extra special permit (US$500 for the first 10 days, US$50 per day thereafter). This means that the route is not overcrowded and the culture of this secluded area is very well preserved.
Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri massif, which makes it a great option during the monsoon months (June to August).
