Trip Overview

This trek will allow you to discover the southern part of the Mustang region, north west of Pokhara.

This is a dry wind-swept semi-deserted area which offers scenic hikes in an incredible landscape, well preserved Tibetan Buddhist culture, distinctive architecture, temples and monasteries and great mountain views.

The trek starts after a scenic flight from Pokhara to Jomsom and follows the spectacular Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest in the world, up to Kagbeni, a fortress town with medieval buildings and statues, offering amazing mountain vistas of Annapurnas, Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri and other Himalayan peaks. The trail then climbs eastwards in and out of a side valley, towards Muktinath, one of the most important religious sites in the Himalayas with Buddhist and Hindus temples.

Along the way, the scenery is spectacular and you will visit the charming ancient villages of Tiri, Jhong and Jarkot with their monasteries and gompas and Lupra, a traditional Bön (a pre-Buddhist shamanistic belief) settlement.

Lower Mustang is more accessible and does not require the special permit needed for the Upper Mustang Trek, making it the ideal choice to visit this region if you have less time or a smaller budget.

Time spent exploring timeless Kathmandu and relaxing in the lakeside town of Pokhara before and after the trek completes your adventure with insights into Nepali culture and tradition.
