This trek is situated in the Langtang Valley, directly north of Kathmandu and near the border with Tibet.
The route follows the Langtang River to the head of the valley, passing through magnificent bamboo and rhododendron forests, home to the endangered red panda, thin pinewoods, waterfalls followed by high yak pastures and alpine meadows.
Once an important trading route with Tibet, this influence is reflected in the character of the villages and peoples.
There are no 8000m (5 miles) peaks, but Langtang Lirung rises well over 7000m (4 miles) and its east face rises for more than 3000 meters (2 miles), the same difference between Everest and its base camp. The village of Kyanjin Gompa is surrounded by snow peaks on all sides and when you ascend up to the top of Kyanjin Ri Peak, the 360 degree views of the Himalayan mountains are truly spectacular.
Although this area was devastated by the 2015 earthquake when Langtang village was completely destroyed by a massive avalanche, the surviving families worked incredibly hard to get back on their feet and the trekking routes have now fully reopened.
Time spent exploring timeless Kathmandu before and after the trek completes your adventure with insights into Nepali culture and traditions.
