What to Do In Lumbini

Lumbini is the birth place of Siddhartha Gautam, later known as Buddha, the enlightened one. It is the source of one of the world’s greatest religions and a pilgrimage site of upmost importance, but also the most important archaeological site in Nepal.

The vast Lumbini complex is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and comprises several Buddhist monasteries and temples built by different countries in their national styles. It houses The Fountain of World Peace, an impressive 41m (134ft) tall white and gold stupa. There is also the famous Ashoka Pillar, erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC, to commemorate Buddha’s birth. Finally, there is also the Maya Devi temple, the oldest archaeological site in Nepal, with its stone marking the precise location of Buddha’s birth.

Around the religious precinct there are also many other archaeological sites, such as the ancient capital of the Sakya Kingdom, or the ruins of the Kolyia Kingdom. As well there is the Bodhi Tree, which is a Sanskrit word for “wisdom” or “enlightened”, where Buddha is believed to have become enlightened.

Lumbini is situated in the south-western Terai lowlands and can be reached with a 5 to 6 hour drive from Pokhara or Kathmandu or with a short flight from Kathmandu.

Visiting the Lumbini area could take from one to several days. We’ll organise your guided tour and activities according to your interests. Here are some of the best things you can do in Lumbini:

  • Wander around Tilaurakot, the ancient Sakyan city of Kapilavastu, visiting the ruins of the walled palace, the childhood home of Buddha.
  • Visit the Eastern Gate, where the once 29 year old Prince Siddhartha Gautam left everything in search of enlightenment.
  • Explore the archaeological site of Kudan, the ancient Nyigrodharama, where Buddha came to meet his father, step mother, wife and son after his enlightenment.
  • Take a tour of the Lumbini Complex; its Sacred Garden, Fountain of World Peace, and many beautiful monasteries.
  • Just sit and spend some quiet time soaking in the serene atmosphere and spiritual energy of this magical place, or meditate under the Bodhi Tree.
