What To Do In And Around Kathmandu

Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital city, is a bustling, chaotic, vibrant, spiritual, and multiethnic melting pot of Hindu and Buddhist cultures.

It is the largest metropolis in Nepal and the center of Nepal’s history and economy.

Discovering its artistic, cultural, and historical heritage is worthy of your time and will be a fascinating experience.

There are seven UNSECO World Heritage sites in the Kathmandu Valley and plenty of small medieval towns and temples to discover. The city is surrounded by many hilltops with great views of the snow-capped Himalayas. From Nagarkot, for example, you can see eight Himalayan ranges including Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Jugal, Rolwaling, Everest, and Numbur range.

There are many more must-see sights you shouldn’t miss. Boudhanath is a Tibetan Buddhist stupa of great religious significance and it’s also one of the largest stupas in the world.

Swayambhunath, also known as the Monkey Temple for the colony of monkeys living here, is a Tibetan Buddhist stupa dating back from the fifth century. Perched on top of a hill, it’s perfect to visit at dawn or dusk for some beautiful views of the city and the Kathmandu Valley.

Pashupatinath is one of Nepal’s holiest Hindu sites and is visited by thousands of pilgrims every day. The temple precinct, located along the banks of the Bagmati river, houses many ancient temples, a golden-roofed pagoda and cremation ghats.

The beautiful Durbar squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur are a collection of ancient religious temples and statues around their royal palaces, courts and fountains. They are the perfect place to discover the traditional Nepali architecture, the typical wood carvings made by the Newari people and to observe the locals sitting and chatting.
